Precious Patch of Sky by Zac Tan
Chaotic, overwhelming, yet deeply soft, the images in Zac Tan's debut monograph present a Japanese landscape reminiscent of a fever dream. Captured over three weeks during his first solitary journey through Tokyo and rural Japan in 2024, the work documents the country from the perspective of an outsider. Moving between peace and noise, the old and the young, tourists and glowing screens, the series reflects the contradictions of present-day Japan.
Within these portraits of strangers, Zac searches for fragments of the people who remind him of himself, finding individuals suspended within their own acts of longing and becoming. By turning the camera outward, these encounters take on the shape of a self-portrait: a search for those who are searching, too.
